Gabe Podiatry - Dr. Stanley Gabe, D.P.M.
COMMON FOOT & ANKLE INJURIES

Ankle Sprains

Ankle sprains are fairly common injuries. An ankle

sprain is the stretching or tearing of one of the

ligaments on either side of the bone of the ankle. (A ligament is a thick band

of tissue between the two bones.) Sprained ankles can be complicated with

a fracture or can occur without  fractures. Your Melbourne podiatrist,

Dr. Gabe can determine the best treatment after X-rays.

Broken Toes

Broken toes often go untreated and can be the cause of deformed toes in

the future. A common toe fracture is caused by bumping the toes against a

piece of furniture. Unfortunately, many people believe that nothing can be

done for a broken toe and therefore do not seek medical attention. Many

broken toes are displaced and if not properly treated can cause problems in

the future. Symptoms include discoloration, swelling, and pain. Remember, if

you are diabetic, prompt medical treatment is of the utmost importance.

Nail Trauma

Everyone has at some time dropped something on a toe. When this occurs,

the nail may be injured, and bleeding may occur under the nail. Your

podiatrist, Dr. Gabe, may need to release the blood under the nail. If severe

enough, he may need to remove the nail in its entirety. Antibiotics may be

needed.

Depending on the severity of the damage, the nail may or may not grow

back.

ARTHRITIS AND YOUR FEET

The podiatrist, responding to a complaint of heel or arch pain, stiffness or

muscle soreness, is often the first doctor to see the early symptoms of

arthritis.

Podiatrists play an important role in the “team approach” to patient

arthritis care. When the joints of the feet are involved, medication, physical

therapy, exercise, special shoes and surgery --as a last resort--are among

the treatment tools used to relieve pain and restore feet to as near normal

function as possible.
